Professionalism and Professional Development

I have been fortunate to have worked for and worked with many institutions, organizations, and corporations. I viewed my experiences with these businesses as wonderful opportunities to grow and develop as a professional, and during these work experiences, I have sharpened my hard and soft skills and learned new ones. I have also had the opportunity to collaborate with many individuals with diverse backgrounds, which has only contributed to my advancement.

One important thing I desire to stress in this written piece is the importance of professionalism and making the most of your work experience. Below are a few points I feel you should keep in mind, whether you are serving in a non-supervisory or supervisory role. I feel this information is also pertinent to anyone who is serving in a consultant role.

Maintain Your Professionalism

Some may argue that the term “professionalism” can mean many things. However, to align with an organization’s definition of professionalism, I recommend reviewing that business’s employee handbook and other related documents. Also, consider observing the behaviors of your managers and colleagues. Although a very select few may not exhibit behaviors that align with what an organization may consider ideal, most employees likely will, and they can provide you with a clearer picture of what is considered acceptable within that work environment. Also, keep in mind that professionalism is not limited to just how you behave, but professionalism is also reflected in the work you do. Remember, you are representing that organization, and you were hired (or will be hired) to produce quality work. So, ensure you are not only working efficiently, but also producing high-grade work and excellent service.

Below are a few other points I wish to make regarding the aspects of professionalism. Please note some of these points have already been mentioned.

Exhibit honest, ethical behavior. Act with integrity.

Speak up about any unethical behavior you witness.

Produce accurate and quality work.

Show commitment. Be fully present. Work the required number of hours.

Go above and beyond. This may mean working some overtime to get the job done.

Be easy to work with. This is crucial, especially when striving to successfully complete projects that require collaboration.

Deal with conflict in a wise manner.

Dress and act in a professional manner.

Be willing to grow and learn.

Professional Development

When discussing professionalism, I briefly mentioned the importance of continual growth and development. Many companies I have worked for provided resources that supported employees’ growth and development. If your organization offers something similar, my recommendation is to take full advantage of these resources, as they can enhance your skills and help drive productivity. Also, when in meetings, be sure to engage. Find ways to express your interest and dedication, and note that engaging shows your manager and colleagues that you are willing to learn, grow, and make a valuable contribution. Below are a few additional recommendations regarding professional development. Please note some of these recommendations have already been mentioned in this written piece:

Engage.

Be proactive. Take on new, challenging projects.

Express your interest and dedication.

Establish and maintain relationships. Set up one-on-one introductory meetings with people not only in your department, but with people outside of your department as well.

Attend professional development sessions, especially if they are sponsored by the company you are working for.

In summary, appreciate your time at an organization. Take full advantage of the resources they provide, and find ways to continually add value to the business. Also, be willing to mentor others. Understand your value. Recognize what you have to offer, but also know that if you don’t “show up” you just may be replaced. I am not referring to layoffs, as this happens frequently. I am specifically referring to an unwillingness to continually make a valuable contribution in a safe, healthy working environment. Lastly and importantly, understand that you are human, so take time off when needed. You will likely return refreshed and more productive.
